Most HID cards contain an RFID chip inside. When the chip inside is in range, it sends a signal to the card reader via its antenna. After this information to the reader, it decides whether the cardholder can enter or not. These cards usually operate at two frequencies, low and high. Low frequency is 125Khz and high frequency is known as 13.56Mhz (NFC). Cards with high frequency are more preferred. This is because it is more secure and protects privacy.
